Monday Morning Excitement!

January 23, 2012

The first poppy bud of the season has been spotted!  Will she be red or will she be pink?  I should know in a few days. Funny how much farther along the poppies are out front than in the back: most of those out back aren't even an inch tall yet.

Oh Cindy! I just love poppies. I usually spread seeds for Shirley poppies and red corn field poppies each fall. I’ve never grown Oriental poppies. Is that what you have in the photo? Do they grown well in the Houston area?
I can't believe you already have Poppy buds!! Mine are still small rosettes. Do you thin yours out as they start to grow?
Oh wow! Mine are just little teeny plants right now. How'd you do that?

These are Oriental poppies, Papaver somniferum, and most of them have reseeded on their own from the previous year. This was the first time I didn't scatter seeds myself and I didn't have to do much thinning because of that. The seeds are so danged tiny that it's hard to sow them thinly. The down side is that I have a lot fewer plants than usual.

I have lots of seeds from last year's crop and if y'all want some, I'm happy to send them. I've heard, though, that they aren't viable for long. If you can wait till fall to sow for next year, I'll save seeds from this year's crop for you!
