Much As I Hate to Admit It ...

The Executive Producer might have a point.


This is the view from the east-facing patio off the master bedroom.  Bluebonnets, violas, poppies, Toadflax, lemon thyme, verbena, roses, Gulf Coast Penstemon ... it's a beautiful bed, isn't it?

Except it's not a bed, at least not most of it as you can see from the above photo.*  The bluebonnets are smack dab in the middle of the path leading off that patio.  So when the Executive Producer asks me, "why can't you just let a path be a path?", I think to myself that he does have a point. I do NOT say it aloud, of course.  Instead I tell him that he doesn't understand cottage garden style.  I know better than to let him think he should have input regarding garden matters!

 *As you can also see above, I've started clearing some of the Violas, thyme and verbena from the path.  Mercy, it's a mess now!

We have the same problem. My plants prefer the paths too. I was going to do something about it this year but find I can't. Today I pulled out masses of bluebonnets.

I had so many basil plants along my public sidewalk that people were smashing them to walk through. Smelled good however.

They are beautiful. Plants know what they like best~Editing is the hardest job for many of us gardeners.

No worries ... those bluebonnets will not be pulled until the seeds are dry. I can live with the mankiness until then!

Editing is definitely one of this gardener's biggest issues! But when the results are serendipitous, I don't care!

Boy, can I relate to this post. Since I have a cottage style garden I encourage my plants to "gently" encroach on my paths. Of course some of them don't know the word gently and start taking over like your plants. (By the way, I just love all of the plants in this "bed".) Last year my Melampodiums went crazy and I had to keep trimming them back off the paths. It is so hard for me to pull plants out, even if they are in the wrong place....I have a hard time thinning seedlings too ;-) Even with some of your plants gone, this is still just beautiful!! All the plants look so happy!

Paths--what are paths??:) I'd have trouble pulling out any of these beauties, too. I thought of you while in Dallas and I was hoping to see some Texas bluebonnets there, but I didn't see a one.
